In today’s fast-paced world, it’s becoming increasingly important to look at education from a holistic perspective—one that goes beyond academics to nurture a child’s emotional, mental, and social development. One of the biggest challenges we face as parents and educators is how to raise children who are not only successful in school but also equipped with the life skills, resilience, and self-respect needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
This shift in approach is at the heart of Gail Hugman’s work, a seasoned educator with over 30 years of experience. Through her company Lessons Alive, Gail has pioneered a new way of thinking about how to motivate and engage children, empowering them to become independent, responsible, and well-rounded individuals.
The Importance of Self-Respect and Engagement
Gail’s journey into holistic education began after she spent three decades teaching in schools around London. Over time, she noticed a significant shift in children’s behavior. Where students once entered classrooms with a sense of respect and curiosity, she observed a growing trend of disengagement, lack of motivation, and disrespect. This growing disconnect made Gail realize that the key to successful education was not just about ensuring children pass tests, but about fostering a sense of self-respect and responsibility in their lives.
In her own classroom, she remembers a moment where she pointed out to her students that no one had acknowledged her presence as their teacher. She asked them, “Where is your self-respect?” This moment was a turning point for Gail, and it became clear to her that children were missing the fundamental values of respect, responsibility, and engagement. She realized that children needed more than just knowledge; they needed life skills that would allow them to engage in the world thoughtfully and with purpose.
Teaching Executive Function Skills
One of the key elements in Gail’s approach to child development is the focus on executive function skills—the mental processes that help us manage our emotions, thoughts, and actions. These skills are essential for success in both school and life and include:
1. Self-control
2. Focus and attention
3. Organization
4. Memory (especially working memory)
5. Planning
6. Time management
7. Critical thinking
8. Perseverance
9. Flexibility
Gail believes that children need to be taught these skills explicitly, as they are foundational to their development and future success. Without self-control, for example, children are unable to focus and engage in the learning process. By teaching these skills early, children are better equipped to manage their emotions, focus on tasks, and take responsibility for their actions.
The Role of Technology in Child Development
In today’s digital age, technology can both help and hinder children’s development. Gail notes the significant impact of excessive screen time on children's ability to focus, learn, and regulate their behavior. She often works with children who are addicted to gaming and other technology, which affects their executive function skills and academic performance. One case that stands out to her is a child who was on the verge of being excluded from school due to behavioral issues, stemming partly from the constant gaming and lack of focus. After working with him to reduce screen time, the child showed remarkable improvement, passing exams and exhibiting better behavior within just a few months.
Gail encourages parents to recognize the impact of technology on children’s brains, particularly those who are more susceptible, such as children with ADHD or dyslexia. Limiting screen time and offering other avenues for engagement can make a huge difference in how children learn and develop.
Teaching Children to Be Independent Thinkers
As a homeschool mother of seven, I deeply resonate with Gail’s philosophy that children should be taught how to learn—not just what to learn. This involves fostering curiosity, encouraging independence, and allowing children to explore their own interests. In Gail’s view, children are not miniature adults, but rather, they are potential adults who need the right environment to grow. By focusing on their personal development—teaching them how to think, how to regulate their emotions, and how to navigate the world—they are better prepared for life, not just school.
One of Gail’s central tenets is the importance of self-reflection. She encourages children to ask themselves, “What is my brain doing right now? Is it helping me learn or is it getting distracted?” This process of self-awareness and self-regulation is crucial for developing not only academic success but also personal responsibility.
Raising Children with Purpose and Integrity
As parents, we want to raise children who are more than just “well-behaved.” We want them to be responsible, respectful, and able to think critically. This is why teaching children morals and conduct is just as important as teaching them math or history. In my own home, I emphasize that conduct is more important than test scores. How we treat others, how we approach challenges, and how we reflect our values to the world—these are the things that will serve our children long after school is over.
Gail's work aligns with this belief, as she helps children and parents focus on developing a holistic mindset that emphasizes personal growth, self-respect, and empathy toward others. By fostering these qualities, we can raise children who not only excel academically but also contribute to society in meaningful ways.

A Holistic Approach to Education
Gail’s work reminds us that education should be about more than just acquiring knowledge. It should be about shaping the next generation of responsible, resilient, and compassionate individuals. This kind of education requires a holistic approach—one that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. By fostering strong executive function skills, encouraging emotional intelligence, and teaching children the value of self-respect and responsibility, we can set them up for success in all areas of life.
